The company is called Lavabit and its owner Ladar Levison offered secure communications services.

Rather than give into the bullying of the US Federal government, Levison closed his company down.

"I think if the American public knew what our government was doing, they wouldn't be allowed to do it anymore."

Here's what Levison said to his customers when he shut his ten year old business down:

"I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people, or walk away from nearly 10 years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit."

Here's a real shocker: He's not even allowed to tell his own attorney about the kind of threats the Feds made against him under threat of imprisonment.
