It's hard to imagine how bad the South Bronx got in the 1960s and 70s.

Shootings, killings and fires every night. Gangs everywhere. Most people didn't go out the door unless they were armed with something - a stick, a knife, a gun.

Shootout were so common that... well, watch the video and get the picture.

I used to take the subway to school every day right through this neighborhood.
