Hurricane Katrina: A Year Later
"The Drive: Lower Ninth Ward and Lakeview"
Eighty Percent Destroyed
The French Quarter and other tourist areas were not hard hit by flooding and are have largely re-opened for business. Visiting New Orleans is a great way to support the city and its citizens.
But beyond the city's core, eighty percent (80%) of the City of New Orleans has been rendered uninhabitable with a corresponding loss to its tax base and basic social services like public health and medical health.
Hurricane Katrina was not the cause of the city's devastation. It was the failure of the levee system - infrastructure that is the responsibility of the federal government - that caused the vast majority of the death and destruction.
