In the fall of 2012, the voters of the Commonwealth of Virginia had to weigh in on the meaning and reach of eminent domain statutes. Under consideration was an amendment to the commonwealth constitution to control the power of local governments to use eminent domain to steal land and buildings from private citizens. Some thought the ramifications of such an amendment would be atrocious: limiting the ability of the government to carry out infrastructure projects.
Others thought that the governor had too much power.
