The nuclear threat in the Middle East
Who has them, who doesn't, - and who has plans to use them
A tour of Israel's secret nuclear weapons program (In Hebrew with English subtitles)
Video: Israel's Capacity
This animation was created based on information passed to The Sunday Times of London by Israeli military veteran Mordechai Venunu, a nuclear technician at Israel's nuclear weapons manufacturing plant near Dimona.
Venunu was kinapped by Israeli agents in Rome and brought back to Israel where he was tried and convicted of treason and espionage. He spent twenty years in prison on those charges, eleven of them in solitary confinement. He has been released from prison, but is not permitted to leave Israel.
Some experts claim that the information Venunu, a low-level technician, shared was already widely known by the intelligence agencies of various countries and that Venunu is being scapegoated as a warning to other Israeli's who might want to share what they know about Israel's covert weapons of mass destruction program.
Israel, which is estimated to be the world's fifth or sixth largest nuclear power, still denies having nuclear weapons, a claim it won't verify by admitting UN weapons inspectors.
Video #2: US Bunker Busters
Nuclear bunker busters: What they really are
Some American officials are starting to talk openly about the possibility of using nuclear weapons against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Not only would such an attack be immoral, it does not even make sense militarily. A nuclear-armed bunker buster attack would fail to damage deeply buried facitilies and stockpiles, but it would spread nuclear fall out and contamination throughout the Middle East and the world.
Ritter claims that in 2005 President George Bush signed off on a plan to attack and destroy Iran's nuclear laboratory and production facilities. American journalist Seymor Hersh has made a similar claim.
