Gary Webb, who broke this story, was demoted by his newspaper, the San Jose Mercury, and driven out of journalism by his "colleagues."
The Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the San Francisco Examiner all ran multi-page stories personally discrediting him.
Webb later committed suicide by shooting himself in the head - twice.
