In New Orleans

The human consequences

What people lost

What they endured: Levee failure

From the ground to the roof in three minutes

How they were abandoned

It was a levee failure,
not a storm that did this

After visiting six times after the levee failures, I'm spending the winter in New Orleans.

The situation here is incredible.

After being 80% destroyed, the city is back and functioning. With challenges, but it is doing very well all things considered.

Those "all things" include the federal government not maintaining its levee and navigation systems, abandoning the victims of the resulting catastrophic floods to die, and then reneging on billions of dollars in aid.

The latest is that the trailers FEMA provided the refugees were laced with toxic formaldehyde and FEMA knew it and did nothing. Now it's been discovered that FEMA employees stole trailer funds to buy meals, trips and official decals (!)) for themselves.

And yet, New Orleans survives and rebuilds with the courage and resourcefulness of its natives and the open hearted generosity of countless volunteers for all over the country and world.

It's a great place, especially now. You help when you come and visit. Come on down. You help just by being here.
