The New Orleans levee failures in 2005 were the biggest engineering failure since Chernobyl, but you're unlikely to ever learn that from watching the US news.
You're also unlikely to ever learn that immediately following the floods New Orleans became a laboratory for various crack pot right wing causes: no labor laws, no environmental laws, destruction of the public school system, destruction of public housing, destruction of public medicine.
