There is a significant difference between what the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints believe and how they present their beliefs to the public.
Mormons can believe whatever they want.

Mitt Romney is running on the "good Christian man" platform, just like George Bush Jr. did, but were the details of his faith to be shared openly with his "fellow Christians", he knows he'd lose votes. So he shades things.
This is how Mormon officialdom operates too and Romney and his family are not just Mormons, they are part of Mormon officialdom.
The Church runs along strict totalitarian lines which is hardly unusual among religions.
Still why put a "happy face" on it? What not admit what you're about?
